Planning a Handyman Visit

A well-planned handyman visit gets more done in less time. Whether you have three jobs or thirty, a little preparation helps us quote accurately and bring the right tools and materials.

Write a clear list

Walk through the house, garage and garden with your phone or a notepad. Write each job on its own line, and note where it is. For example:

  • Main bedroom door rubs at the top corner and will not latch
  • Hole in the hallway wall behind the laundry door
  • Mouldy silicone around the ensuite shower base
  • Two loose palings on the left side fence near the gate

Specific descriptions are much more useful than general ones like “fix doors”.

Take useful photos

  • One close-up showing the problem clearly
  • One wider shot showing where it is
  • For doors, the gap or the rub point
  • For walls, the size of the hole, with something for scale
  • For fences and gates, the whole section
  • For TV mounting, the wall and the TV size

Measure where you can

Measurements help us bring the right materials. Fence lengths and heights, deck board sizes, flyscreen frame dimensions, shelf lengths and door sizes are all useful.

Prioritise

Mark the jobs that matter most. If time runs short on the day, the priorities are done first.

Materials

Let us know if you have already bought items such as a TV bracket, shelves, curtain rods, blinds, door handles or furniture. We can also supply common materials. For paint, note the brand and colour if you know them.

Access and pets

Tell us about parking, stairs, gate codes and keys. Secure pets during the visit. On rural properties, mention livestock, dogs and electric fences.

Clear the work areas

Move furniture and personal items away from walls and areas where we will be working, where you can. It saves time.

Group jobs by area

Jobs in the same room or part of the property are quicker together. On larger properties, grouping by area saves walking and moving equipment.

Know what is outside scope

Electrical, plumbing, gas, structural, asbestos and roof work need licensed trades. Separate these from your list so you can book them directly.

On the day

We will confirm the list with you at the start, work through it in order and let you know straight away if anything unexpected comes up. At the end, we walk through what was done.
