Storm Prep for Semi-Rural Blocks

Larger blocks around Devon Meadows, Cranbourne South, Lang Lang and Koo Wee Rup sit on open land with few buildings to break the wind. Spring storms, strong winter fronts and summer thunderstorms can do real damage. A little preparation reduces the risk to buildings, animals and people.

Before the season

Gutters and downpipes

Clear gutters and downpipes so heavy rain can drain. Blocked gutters overflow into eaves and walls. Check that downpipes discharge away from buildings and that drains are clear. Gutter guard can help on properties surrounded by trees.

Gates

Check every gate swings freely and latches securely. A gate that will not latch can swing in the wind, damage itself and its post, and let animals out. Replace worn hinges and latches, and add gate stops or chains on gates exposed to strong winds.

Fences

Walk the fence lines. Look for leaning posts, loose rails, missing palings and sagging wire. Rotten posts in wet ground are often the weak point. Repairing them before a storm is far easier than after.

Sheds and outbuildings

Check shed doors close and lock properly. Sliding doors that jump their tracks can be blown open and damaged. Make sure loose roof sheets and flashings are fixed by a qualified roofer. Store loose items inside.

Trees

Large trees near buildings, fences and driveways should be checked by a qualified arborist, especially if branches are dead or overhanging the roof.

When a storm is forecast

  • Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, trampolines, bins and loose materials.
  • Close and latch all gates and shed doors.
  • Move vehicles, floats and machinery away from trees.
  • Move animals to sheltered paddocks away from trees and power lines.
  • Check you have torches, batteries, a charged phone and a battery radio.
  • Follow warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology and VicEmergency.

After the storm

  • Stay away from fallen power lines and report them to your electricity distributor.
  • For trees on buildings, roof damage or flooding, call the SES on its emergency number.
  • Photograph damage before cleaning up, for your insurer.
  • Contact your insurer before arranging major repairs.
  • Check fences and gates before letting animals out.
